Dear Patient, Your doctor has recommended an Upper GI Endoscopy (EGD). This message will help you understand the procedure, preparation, and what to expect.
What is it?
A thin, flexible tube with a camera is passed through your mouth to examine your food pipe, stomach, and upper intestine. Preparation
How to Prepare
Do NOT eat or drink anything for 6–8 hours before the test
Inform us about blood thinners, diabetes medicines, or allergies
Arrange someone to accompany you (you cannot drive after sedation)
Remove dentures, jewelry & glasses before the procedure
Bring your previous reports, if any
During the Procedure
What Happens During the Test
You will lie on your left side
A mild sedative will be given for comfort
The test usually takes 10–20 minutes
You may feel bloating from air used to view clearly
Biopsy (if needed) is painless After the Procedure
After Your Endoscopy
Rest until sedation wears off (30–60 mins)
Mild throat discomfort or bloating is normal
Avoid driving or important decisions for 24 hours
Eat light food once fully alert
Biopsy results (if taken) in a few days
Seek immediate care if you notice: Severe pain, vomiting blood, black stools, fever, or breathing difficulty.
